Our History and Denominational Affiliation

Our story:

The First Congregational Church of Eastlake was organized in 1915, and in June of 2005, we celebrated our 90th anniversary as a body of Christ.  For many years it was a rural church, but now is in an area of transition as new housing developments have been built all around us.

Just as there has been transition in the Eastlake-Thornton area, there has been a transition in our church membership over the past few years.  We are now a church of all age groupings, and we strive to serve each and every one, regardless of age.  We have a special sermon for the boys and girls that is a part of our worship service, and we offer Sunday School (all ages, including adults) each Sunday immediately following our worship service except June through August.  We have recently added a Children’s Choir that sings in our worship service monthly.

There has been a great deal of debate over what style of worship is best: Traditional, contemporary, or “blended”.  At First Congregational Church of Eastlake we have followed a more traditional style of worship, complete with a choir, an organ, and hymnals.  No Praise Team.  No Band.  Traditional music played in the traditional way.

The Holy Bible is a wonderful instruction book for daily living, as it has been for thousands of years.  The Pastor’s message is designed to give you a practical, hands-on guide for living in today’s world.  We live in a very modern and complex age.  Despite that fact, the Bible is just as relevant today as it was in the years since it was written.  So while the music is traditional, the message is upbeat, relevant, and practical.

We invite you to join us.

Our Denomination:

The U.C.C. The Congregational Church is the church of the Pilgrims, the Nation's early settlers. We are part of a larger church, the United Church of Christ, which is the union of the Congregational Church with the Evangelical and Reformed Church. The Evangelical Synod of North America was Lutheran, the Reformed Church originated from the Church of Swiss Reformation.

We are an ecumenical church and are involved in discussions with many other denominations; including the Methodists, Presbyterian, and Disciples of Christ. We had official representatives at the Vatican Ecumenical Council at the invitation of Pope John.
